Since the first Korean practice post was successful, I've decided to make it monthly. I've also added a tag so that you can find the posts easily. Like last time, I'm going to make 3 question threads below (beginner, intermediate and advanced).

You can answer one or several prompts.
You can talk to one another.
You can also correct one another. Or just indicate "No corrections, please" in your comment if you prefer.

I haven't developed the instinct for 알았어요/알겠어요 yet, but I think it's fine, because -겠- is supposed to make the tone less affirmative/more polite.

I think 알았어요 is "I knew (that)" (past tense) and 알겠어요 is "Ah, now I know (because you've told me)" or "Got it!" (I may be wrong, though!)

A casual internet search comes up with similar explanations. Basically, the -겠- form seems to soften the "I understand/ I get it' and make it more polite.

*nodnod* Like in 잘 먹겠습니다. ^^ In dramas, I often hear people saying 알겠습니다 to their bosses/superiors when receiving instructions/commands, or 알겠어(요) to someone who's explained something to them or told/asked them to do something. (Which is in line with this short YT video.) If what you mean is a polite "oh, I see/is that so" then 그렇군요 is probably better.

/sorry to labour the point, feel free to ignore me, nearly everything I say is inferred from drama dialogue and random internet searches, disclaim, disclaim :-)

아, 저도 바나나를 좋아해요.

Nah, it's fine. You can maybe use 그리고 instead of 하지만, because I expected you to follow 하지만 with something you didn't like. But it's just a matter of nuance.

In retrospect (thinking about it a bit more), I think that should have been "고양이 아이콘이" but I'm always hazy on topic vs subject particles. /o\

The first one (고양이 아이콘은) sounds more Korean to me. Sometimes, it's better not to think too much about these things. lol

Ha. It's just that I remembered an old TTMIK podcast explaining subject and topic markers, in which they said if you use 은/는 in a compliment, it can be a bit rude because 은/는 implies contrast, so you're saying, like, "Your hair is pretty... (implied: unlike everything else about you)."

Very interesting! I had never encountered this nuance.

Though in this specific case, the icon is the only thing you see, so maybe it's not rude?

그건 아니라, 대신 어떤 과일엔 있는 설탕 종류는 제 소화한테 안 좋은데 과당이라고 해요. 포도하고 감귤류의 과일 잘 먹을 수 있어요. ^^

최근에는 제가 박상영의 '대도시의 사랑법'을 읽었어요. 영화하고 드라마 있을 거라서 제가 텀블러에서 북클럽 회원들과 함께 영어 변역을 읽었어요. 서울에 사는 게이 남자의 이야기예요. 로맨스 아니라 현대 픽션이에요.

요즘 주로 팬픽션을 읽고 있어요. 그것 전에 역사적 로맨스 소설 몇개 읽었어요. 아무것도 기억 잘 안 나요. 근데 오디오북에는, Nghi Vo's Singing Hills Cycle에 마지막 책을 들었는데 마음이 너무 들었어요. 클레릭 치가 집으로 돌아갔을때 맘모스 두 마리가 문에 있고 사랑한 늙은 수도자가 돌아셨어요. 슬프지만 생각스럽고 좋은 느낌 있는 것 같아요.

어떤 제가 산 이야기도 어떤 AO3로 다운로드한 팬픽션도 둘다 있어요. Kindle에서 잘 정리할 수 없어서 어수선해요.

지역 도서관에서는 어떤 활동이 계획돼요? 어떤 다른 활동에 관심이 있어요?

불행하게, 우리 도시의 큰 도서관의 문이 몇년 동안 닫아야 됐는데 지진 오면 너무 약해서 강화돼야 하고 있거든요. 그 동안, 작은 도서관 여기저기 밖에 없어요. 옛날엔, 제가 한극어하고 영어를 연습하려고 큰 도서관에서 제 언어 교환 파트너와 만났어요.

china_shop이가 사는 도시에는 지진이 많이 있어요? 강해요? 며칠 전 제가 '지진', '진원'하고 '여진' 단어를 배웠어요.

우리 도시는 단층선 위에 있어요. 10년쯤 전에 큰 지진 나서 어떤 건물 몇개 좀 손상했어요. 그 후에 큰 건물 다 확인돼야 했죠.

(사실, 우리 나라에 단층선 많아요. 2011엔 남섬에서 아주 큰 지진이 나서 많이 사람들을 죽었어요. 그 도시는 상처가 아직 있어요.)

저는 일본에 지진에 대해 자주 듣지만 제가 뉴질랜드에 단층선이 많은 걸 몰랐어요.

네, 뉴질랜드가 아름다운 경치로 주로 유명이 있는 것 같죠? 아마 관광업 때문에요.
