The City We Became by NK Jemisin
Jan. 25th, 2024 09:24 pmThe City We Became by NK Jemisin (The Inheritance Trilogy, Dreamblood, The Broken Earth) was amazing! New York City's primary avatar disappears after the city is born. It's up to the avatars of its five boroughs to defend it against Eldritch horrors from another dimension.
I always wait for all books in a series by NK Jemisin to get released (preferably as paperbacks) before buying them, because her writing is so intense! Though, in this case, I had already read the short story "The City Born Great" as it was printed in her collection of stories How Long 'til Black Future Month? Don't worry if you haven't read it, it's basically the same text as the prologue of this tome.
Based on the short story, I didn't expect this novel to turn out to be some sort ofSense8 Sense6, so I was absolutely delighted when I realised it.
There are several mlm and one wlw major characters, as well as a trans male minor character. Most of the characters are POC and represent well the melting pot of NYC.
