I had heard that JKR had donated a shitload of money to a TERF campaign, but there was no source at the time. Now, I've found articles about it (here's one not behind a paywall).

£70,000 = $88,000 = €82,000

It makes me want to throw up. Once again, I encourage you to read other magic school books, written by authors who support LGBT rights!

I'm still baffled again and again how deep she fell down that particular shitty hole... She could've been the coolest, most beloved person ever and instead she did - that.

I've been reccing Chris Colfer's "Land of Stories" to my friends. It's set in the world of fairytales and has gotten lots of praise for its worldbuilding and engaging story and characters. I'm really happy for Colfer that he managed to build this writing career.

That sounds like a cool book series. The Percy Jackson books also get recommended a lot as a replacement for middle-schoolers, and they introduce more and more LGBT characters. And for people looking for full-on LGBT middle-grade titles, there's a lot of choice these days.

Exactly! No-one really needs to support the shitty TERF anymore. But the problem is that HP is such a cultural phenomenon - many many of my friends have no idea how awful JKR is, they know the books (might have read them but not necessarily) and the kids want to read the books/watch the movies because other kids in their classes have done so and talk about it.
Like, in mainstream German media, you don't get anything about JKR supporting TERF shit (you don't get all that much UK politics in general besides the Royals and prime minister drama/Brexit stuff).

I've heard good things about the Percy Jackson books too, and with the new tv series, it might see a resurgence.

Yes, which is why it's important to share the information. And even like that, people were saying that she didn't do much, just a few tweets about gender, no insults against trans people. I'm sorry, but giving £70,000 to a campaign "about gender, no insults against trans people" is going to cause a lot of damage to the trans community, both in terms of mental health and in terms of attacks from the outside (like when people voted for Brexit or for Trump, there was an increase in racism).

All of this makes me so fucking GLAD that I never read a single page of Harry Potter or watched the movies. Fuck's sakes, JKR really is a piece of work ... Pisses me off that she uses her popularity to finance an anti trans campaign. UGH.

This - her open anti trans stance and all - is also the reason why everything HP is banned in a Build a Bear FB group I am in. The owner is LGBTQ+, and after some talking with the other mods and admins, they've made the decision to ban all things HP (and BaB does have a Harry Potter range) in there. Some may say it's censorship, but they want everyone to be safe in there, and you never know who might share JKR's views ...

I know some HP fans who still enjoy the books and movies but are wise enough to dislike JKR for what she has done recently. Separate the art from the artist.

Yes, there are a lot of pages on Tumblr where people refuse HP-related submissions. That's the way to go! It's not censorship, people can talk about it elsewhere.
