A Song of Salvation by Alechia Dow (The Sound of Stars, The Kindred) was wonderful. Zaira is the reincarnation of Indigo, the God who created the universe. She and her friends must join the fight against the Ilori, who are in the process of colonising Earth.

All 3 books are marketed as stand-alones taking place in the same world, but this one has several characters from the previous ones, so I recommend reading them in order. It's definitely worth it, as Alechia Dow is currently one of the strongest voices of Black sci-fi YA.

There's major m/m, where both guys are demiromantic and demisexual. Zaira is a-spec as well. Indigo was non-binary.

I started reading this one last week but now, after reading your review, I'm thinking maybe I should go back and read them in order. Hmmm

Thanks for the tip! I'm only like 4 chapters in so it wouldn't be a big deal to return it to the library and start the books in order.
