The novella Tadek and the Princess by Alexandra Rowland was lovely. It alternates between chapters taking place right after the novel A Taste of Gold and Iron and chapters taking place long before, when Tadek was a street urchin.
The Princess from the title is Crown Princess Mihrişah, who was Prince Kadou's mother and who encouraged Tadek to join the Kahyalar Academy. The story is sometimes funny (the chicken statue scene!), sometimes sad (Tadek's grief for his Lady).
Tadek is gay, and there's some Prince Kadou/Evemer action in the background.
