Of Feathers and Thorns by Kit Vincent was awesome! When his magical powers awaken, Kieren is sent to study with Master Hanska and his first apprentice, Esten.

This is a 19th century-ish story that takes place in the US, with a touch of portal fantasy. The magic system is original. I adore Oi, the spirit living in a doll that Kieren can hear, but Esten can't. I hope to see these characters again in the future.

There's major m/m, as well as a genderfluid minor character.
