Lost Tomb 3 + Fire Island
The c-drama Lost Tomb 3, aka Ultimate Note, was a lot of fun!
So far, I've seen Lost Tomb Reboot, the donghua and now Ultimate Note, which has become my favourite:
- Iron Triangle all along, which is necessary so that I get my Wu Xie/Xiaoge fix <3
- HeiHua, that I actually found a bit slashier than Wu Xie/Xiaoge
- Huo Xiu Xiu, who is a cool female character
- A plot that pretty much makes sense (if you've seen Reboot, you know that the plot in that one doesn't XD)
- Consistently great pacing
- Several opening credits, which are always nice to look at
- Behind-the-scenes and bloopers in the ending credits
The only negative point is that the story stops in the middle and there's no Season 2. I could always read the books, but my to-read list is already long enough as it is.
You can watch it legally and for free on iQiyi.

Hulu's movie Fire Island was much better than its trailer. It's a gay, Asian American and modern (very loose) adaptation of Pride & Prejudice.
It was great to see Conrad Ricamora (Oliver in HTGAWM) again. Does anyone else think that he played Will as autistic rather than as asshole-ish? Because I found him very relatable.
Margaret Cho was also in this and there was mlm/wlw solidarity, which is always a plus.

Bwhahaha YES yes this exactly. UN isn't perfect plot-wise but wow, in comparison? It's amazing. Also I appreciate that the Triangle sticks together for a lot more of the story, I will never understand the choice to have Xiaoge randomly disappear for 2/3rds of Reboot.

I saw Guardian after Lost Tomb Reboot, but there's definitely some Z1L fandom overlap.

That type of thing is usually very much my thing and very much the area of action films that interests me.

You could try picking up one of the other series (just not TLT 2 or 2.5, which are even weaker than TLT 1), and see if that sparks your interest more. Maybe the mystery of having no idea what's going on might appeal to you? *G*
I know plenty of people who started with the Reboot, which is currently the last one on the timeline, or some that started out with The Mystic Nine, which would be the first one, set in the late 1930s. Or try Tomb of the Sea, which is basically an outsider POV. That might work well, since the poor protagonist has no clue what's going on the whole time.

I have a lot of mates who are really into Reboot but I think that has more to do with the actors than anything.
I did love the fanvid though:

I totally get that. *g* It wasn't quite the same for me, but I did enjoy myself.

While I generally prefer Charlotte Bronte to Jane Austen, I thought it was a great modern gay adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. I didn't have any trouble identify which characters filled which roles from the original novel. I loved that--being a modern liberated version--Will could just scare the Hell out of Dex when he pulled his dastardly behavior instead of having to pay him off the way Darcy has to with Wickham.

It's not just you. I think its being a modern adaptation gave him the freedom to have Will's stiffness come from autism rather than class notions of "propriety." I say that as an autistic. Part of how he reads as autistic not just ridged to me is that when Noah calls him on things he doesn't just drop it if it's inappropriate--he apologizes. That, to me, is someone who isn't just giving into someone they have feelings for--it's someone who genuinely didn't realize how they were coming across.

Oh, it definitely isn't just you. I'd say the modernization in Fire Island presents Will as autistic and Charlie as ADHD. I mean Charlie not only is the one whose friends are all protective of him, but the one even Howie has to tell to dial it back when he jumps to "I love you" for his big statement.
I'm undiagnosed, but very likely to be on the spectrum as well.
Totally understand. My father wasn't properly diagnosed until he was 70, and I wasn't properly diagnosed until I was 44. It's easy for me to see Will and Charlie as autistic and ADHD because while I'm only diagnosed as ADD no H, my younger brother is ADHD.
The island is out of his comfort zone, he went to spend the holidays with his best friend, but he's out of spoons and comes off as rude because of that probably much more than in his daily life.
Absolutely, I run out of spoons much more quickly away from home. Routine is highly important to me. At home I have a routine. For travel I have some routines for traveling, but if I don't have a specific plan for what I'm doing once I get there...
I would totally be friends with him.
Yeah, I love that over the course of the movie they do allow him to get more use to Noah so he knows at the end to reassure Noah "it's just a dance." They handle him very well allowing him to apologize when he's called out, and to learn as he goes along. I was quite pleased that it not only updates the story, with it's modern setting and LGBTQ+ characters, but unlike some adaptations more slavishly dedicated to the plot it gives its characters personal reasons for their actions not just socioeconomnic ones.

Yeah, routines are important to me too. I can be out of my comfort zone, but not too much out of it.

Technically they don't use ADD as a diagnosis anymore. What I have is "ADHD, inattentive type," but it means no hyperactivity. I get distracted, but I don't get impulsive. The H leads to impulsive behavior. My brother drove our dad nuts all through our childhood by doing things because he felt like it at the moment, and not being able to explain after why he did it. He has medication now, but he didn't seek mental health treatment until college, and then it was for his bipolar. Hyper he was comfortable with manic he was not.
Yeah, routines are important to me too. I can be out of my comfort zone, but not too much out of it.
Definitely sounds like you're on the spectrum. I was initially identified as only being mildly autistic, but after further testing I was properly identified as moderately autistic.

This is it. I started with Ultimate Note and I am so glad I did because I could make sense of the interactions between WX and XG in Reboot. Simultaneously it made me so angry at how much they erased a central character in Reboot.

Please do drop a link. It doesn't have to be a whole post of its own but I'm still hoping new people might find the fandom and find like-minded people via that comm.ETA. Whoops I misread your comment ;-) I'll drop a link there.
